My dear local writer friend has loaned one of her novels to the high school where she teaches for a film project. One of the classes is making this wonderful young adult novel into a feature length movie. She’s loving the process, and it’s been long enough since she published the book that she doesn’t mind the ways in which the kids have changed story and character.
I knew she would wrangle me into getting involved, dammit. I cannot say no to her because she is who she is to me.
I’m playing the main character’s “crazy mother.” She needed someone semi-thin and gray haired with the ability to look vacant in a hospital gown.
hahahaha!
ahem.
I warned her that I haven’t done any acting (beyond one of my own monologues and my own poems) since just before I got pregnant with my 14 year old.
It will be fine, of course. I don’t have any lines, just pantomime (one of the scenes, however, involves the crazy mother getting beaten up by her husband, which does not thrill me. I’m much more comfortable with the idea of looking old and catatonic).
The book is wonderful, and I wish a mainstream publisher had picked it up. At least now it will be forever made live in film.
